1. From poet to painter: Up to 1927 (age 0–22)

The Nambata family had been in the direct service of the Tokugawa government, and Tatsuoki’s father, Noriyoshi relocated to Asahikawa in Hokkaido with lofty ambitions as a captain of military settlers opening up the new land. His name is immortalised in the Nambata River in Asahikawa. Following his mission in Hokkaido, Noriyoshi brought his family to Tokyo, living in a home that backed onto a plot where Takamura Kotaro happened to have his studio. They struck up a friendship with Takamura, and that eventually led to Tatsuoki deciding to become a painter. This section includes Tatsuoki’s portraits of his parents, his father’s last calligraphy, poems from his student days at Waseda University, correspondence concerning the death of his close friend Yoshino Tamao, letters from Takamura Kotaro, and many other items exhibited in public for the first time, providing an opportunity to think about Nambata Tatsuoki’s background.
