3.Searching for direction—from representational to abstract 1951–1954 (age 46–49)
Sketchbooks probably used by Nambata in about 1953 contain vast numbers of faithfully executed representative drawings, but they also reveal what are clearly experiments at simplification or producing abstract versions. Works in an abstract style described as Informel were introduced to Japan from the mid-1950s to the early 1960s, greatly stimulating the Japanese art world, but this section demonstrates that Nambata’s interest had already shifted from the representational to the abstract as soon as the war came to an end.
